Mission Statement

We keep the cultural and religious traditions of the Hindu Community alive and pass them on to future generations. We come together to celebrate the major festivals, and organise excursions to places of interest in the UK and abroad. We participate in similar events arranged by related organisations.

We support the practice of Indian music and dance and also invite outside artists to perform at our gatherings.

We promote Hindu values to the wider Blackburn community, invite members of other communities to our functions, and work in bodies designed to foster good community relations in Blackburn with Darwen. We represent the Hindu community at public events.

We help with the welfare of our members.

History

It all started with a small group of people who felt that an association should be set up to meet the needs of the Hindu community in the early seventies. Then in April 1973 a general meeting was called and Blackburn Hindu Centre was set up with a constitution and an executive committee.

In the mid seventies to the mid eighties we had up to 450 Hindu families living in Blackburn and Darwen but due to economic reasons many families migrated down south for better opportunities hence reducing the number to just under 100 families at present.

However, as the years went by, the BHC firmly established itself with the public, private and voluntary sector organisations and earned its respect particularly in dealing with issues relating to the Hindu community as it proved a major contributor to promote and share Hindu culture, tradition and social etiquette with the indigenous population.
